PROTEKTOR (PROTECTOR)
Directed by Marek Najbrt (2009, Czech Republic/Germany, 98 min., Czech with English subtitles)
Tuesday, March 2, 7:00 pm
West Newton Cinema (1296 Washington Street/Route 16)
The year is 1938; the country, Czechoslovakia. Hana has her first big success in film – and the German Occupation, or Protectorate, begins. As a Jew, Hana’s dreams for a successful career are smashed.
Her non-Jewish husband Emil, a radio reporter, collaborates with the Nazis more and more. Running late to work, he grabs a stray bicycle on the street, one that looks a lot like that used by the would-be assassin of the Reich Deputy Protector Reinhard Heydrich.
Protektor is a stylish thriller, well-acted. No wonder it’s the Czech Republic’s official submission for this year’s Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar.
Ticket prices: $15 general admission; $12 for students, seniors 65+, and members of The Boston Jewish Film Festival and WGBH.
Purchase tickets online with a credit card through www.bjff.org or in person (cash only) at the West Newton Cinema, daily from 1PM to 8PM.
