Food Editor's Notes:  This is a very simple, but great, recipe from my mother-in-law, who is an excellent cook.  A recipe isn't really needed to make this – I got the instructions in one minute over the telephone!  These are a touch sweeter than other poached pears, but need no embellishment.  Or you could always serve them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!  Serve cold – the juices will thicken and be perfect with the pears (and optional ice cream!).
Fresh pears, Bartlett or Bosc
Orange juice
Light brown sugar
Peel each pear, then cut in half and core.  Place in a shallow baking dish to hold all the halves.

For each whole pear used, pour 1/3 cup orange juice over the pears and sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of light brown sugar on top.

Cook in the microwave 3-5 minutes or in a preheated 375-degree oven 15-20 minutes, until tender.  Test by inserting a toothpick into the thickest part of the pear.  (Bosc pears will take a little longer than Bartlett pears, as they are crisper.)

Remove from microwave or oven and let cool.  Refrigerate the pears in the juices and serve cold.
